10K runners brave heat

Three men joined thousands of others in the annual British 10K London Run on Sunday 11 July, helping to raise hundreds of pounds for the work of the Methodist Relief and Development Fund (MRDF).

John Goodwin, a children's and youth worker, Sam Hollingworth, a town planner and MRDF Programme Manager Nick Burn joined over 25,000 people in the run which took them past historic sights such as the Tower of London and Big Ben. All three supporters finished the race in just over an hour.

John, from London, said: ‘I have supported an MRDF street children's project in Bangladesh for many years, so being part of this race was part of a lifelong commitment to its work.'

Sam, from Essex, said: ‘I wanted to raise money for MRDF because whilst there seems to be a number of charities striving to eradicate poverty, MRDF focuses on working with local communities, people who can best understand the challenges facing them. That's why they stand out for me.'

For Nick, who works with some of MRDF's projects in Africa and Asia, the run was an opportunity to raise money for work he has become so inspired by. ‘Our run was nothing in comparison to the race that many poor communities around the world are in to get out of poverty', he said. 'Thousands of people die every day from extreme poverty so the work of MRDF is vital.'
