What do you get if you cross a love of football with a passion for tackling poverty?
District World Development Secretary for Nottingham and Derby, John Hindson combined the two by taking the 'Match of the Day' theme tune and writing a song to inspire and challenge us as we celebrate MRDF's 21st birthday this year:
MRDF is 21 folks
A 'small miracle' ' let's be pleased.
Acting with Churches Together
Many people have been released
From poverty, sickness, death and hunger '
Been helped along life's way '
Made to feel that someone's with them
By what we do as well as say.
When Jesus walked this earth before us
He thought of others first;
He asked his friends to seek for justice
For those who were immersed
In problems brought about by evil
In systems large or small.
He was asked 'who is my neighbour''
Said He came to die for all.
Surely, as we live out our lives here
On earth, which God has made
We ought to note effects on others
Of unjust means of trade.
And, if Jesus is our Saviour,
We ought to be prepared
To preach justice and help others
So that all folk have fair shares.
MRDF is 21 folks '
A child of '85.
Because of all it's done since
Many people are still alive
Enjoying the kind of blessings
Which we can easily 'take as read' '
Heat and shelter, food and clothing
And a night a safe, warm bed.
MRDF is 21 folks '
A lot has been achieved
But the task is just as great now
As when MRDF was first conceived.
Let's now renew the commitment
To see the struggle through.
As our Lord said on His journey
'Let us help make all things new.'
