Following recent flooding in India, MRDF has sent an initial £15,000 to support the affected communities and is accepting donations to cover the remaining need.
The floods, which hit Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh in southern India, have been called the worst in decades. Over 250 people were killed – with the death toll expected to rise - and 2.5 million are homeless in a region that has just suffered acute droughts. With fears of the spread of disease and severe food shortages, there is a need for urgent action.
MRDF's Humanitarian Officer, Claire Grant, said: ‘These floods have devastated whole communities and left millions of people without the basic necessities. We have a real opportunity to bring relief to thousands of at-risk people, but only if we act quickly.'
Working through its local partner in Andhra Pradesh, MRDF is helping to provide vulnerable communities with food, water, clothes and medicine. Donations to the appeal will also enable the project to offer counselling services.
Audrey Skervin, MRDF Supporter Relations Officer, said: ‘We are hugely grateful to the many churches that are already supporting our work this Harvest. We encourage those who are preparing Harvest donations to send them, as planned, to our general fund. This will enable us to respond quickly to a number of humanitarian crises, such as the current situation in India, as well as continue our vital long-term development work in some of the world's poorest communities.'
