MRDF partners are responding to a powerful earthquake, rating 6.3 at Richter scale, which struck the coast of West Sumatra in Indonesia on Tuesday 6 March.
The tremor was felt as far as Singapore and Malaysia. Thousands of people fled to higher ground in fear of a possible tsunami. However, officials from the Office of Meteorology and Geophysics said that the quakes would not trigger a tsunami.
So far, the official death toll recorded is 71, with fears that the numbers may rise as information is received from remote areas, where many buildings are said to have collapsed.
Hundreds of people were injured, overwhelming local hospitals and health facilities. Many of them are being treated in temporary tents.
MRDF is able to accept donations for the relief effort which is being carried out by members of the Action by Churches Together global alliance. The three ACT member organisations in Indonesia are preparing their response, which will include providing medical care and relief items as needed.
