right: Mishal (on the right) and her classmates received extra tuition so that they could continue with their education despite the damage caused by the Tsunami.
Mishal Selvaraj was preparing for her A levels when the Tsunami struck Sri Lanka in December 2004. She survived, but lost her house and belongings, including all her books and notes.
Nearby schools were closed for 2-3 months, and many were used as initial shelters for the displaced. Even when they re-opened, teachers and resources were few.
MRDF partner, the YMCA in Batticaloa, advertised for 50 A level students wanting additional tuition. They had underestimated the desire to study and by the end of the first week, 300 students were being tutored in a temporary classroom.
The urgent need for food, clothes and shelter after a disaster is very obvious. Yet education is also vital; whether or not young people pass their exams can affect their whole futures.
Mishal was determined to work hard, no matter what circumstances she faced, but the tutoring, books and a quiet place to study that were provided by MRDF partners have made a huge difference. Not only has she passed her exams, but has the results that she needs to start university.

Mishal's classmate, Vadivel sums it up the experience of their whole class: "With your help only, we were able to study and get a high result. This will help us to live our lives happily." |
