Monsoon causes misery across Asia

Emergency Situation

Over 25 million people have reportedly been affected by the monsoon floods and landslides in India, Bangladesh and Nepal and more than 1,000 lives have been lost. China and Pakistan have also suffered torrential rains and floods in the past month.

MRDF's partners in the Action by Churches Together (ACT) Alliance are responding to the devastation caused by floods across vast regions of Asia.  Donate now to help those affected by flooding.

Response

Local ACT members in Asia are working hard in the midst of the crisis to help the most vulnerable people.

In Bangladesh, ACT has been giving out food and other essential items, including medicines and clothing to 16,000 affected families.  In addition, MRDF has worked for many years with street children in the capital Dhaka through CSKS, a local partner organisation.  CSKS is currently providing emergency food supplies, clean water and medicine to 2,000 children living on the streets who suffered as a result of the flooding.

In Nepal, ACT members are supplying food to 5,000 people in specifically targeted vulnerable villages.

In India, over 60,000 people are receiving relief supplies from ACT, including food, safe water and shelter.

Climate Change

Floods have recently affected a quarter of a million people in the UK, and we can appreciate the gravity and scale of the crisis in Asia.  Floods are not a new phenomenon for people in Asia, but the intensity and magnitude of this year's monsoon have overwhelmed communities' usual coping abilities.

Many observers, including ACT members responding to the crisis, have identified climate change as a factor in the increasingly torrential monsoon season in Asia.

Climate change is having a devastating impact on the world's poorest communities. MRDF helps communities to protect their local environments and adapt to climate change, while also encouraging supporters in the UK to take action on tackling climate change.
