millennium development goals

Dinesh, Ethopia

left to right: India, Ethiopia and Mali are just three of the countries where MRDF partners work to reduce poverty.

In 2000, all 191 member states of the United Nations promised to achieve a set of wide-reaching targets, called the Millennium Development Goals.  The aim? To halve absolute poverty by 2015.

MRDF partners provide practical help to local communities according to the same priorities.  Click on the links below to see how MRDF partners are helping eradicate poverty at a local level.

  • Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
  • Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
  • Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
  • Goal 5: Improve maternal health
  • Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  • Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development

We are fast approaching the half way mark, but it seems unlikely that world leaders will hit the targets.  MRDF supports campaigns urging world leaders to take action on trade justice, debt and aid, so as not to miss this vital opportunity to tackle poverty.
