MRDF make waves at Downing street

MRDF staff and supporters marching with hundreds of messages from Methodist people, before presenting these messages to the Prime Minister.

MRDF staff and supporters delivered a petition to Downing street on 5 December, calling Gordon Brown to take urgent action against climate change. The petition was made up of messages from hundreds of Methodist people from churches and schools across the UK.

Before the hand-in MRDF supporters took part in an ecumenical church service at Methodist Central Hall attended by the President and Vice-President of Conference and other national Church leaders including the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. They then joined over 50,000 other people at The Wave, a carnival-style street procession urging world leaders to keep global warming under 2 degrees when they meet at the UN Climate Change Conference at Copenhagen on 7 December.

Anna Rogers from MRDF said: ‘The areas where many of our partners around the world work are already suffering as a result of climate change; crop yields are reducing year after year, sending whole communities into a desperate spiral of poverty. We presented this petition to Downing Street on behalf of these vulnerable communities and all who are concerned for a just deal at Copenhagen. We hope that Gordon Brown and his fellow world leaders act courageously and decisively to prevent climate change from becoming irreversible.'
