Radika and her neighbours work hard to cultivate their crops.
Nepal’s freezing temperatures mean that high in the mountains, it is nearly impossible to grow a successful harvest. Although the sun shines often, rainfall is low, and winter temperatures can drop as low as -20°C.
In previous years, Radika, her husband and three daughters ate dried food for most of the year. They suffered from weakness and poor eyesight because of a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables.
MRDF partner Himalayan Permaculture Group (HPG) taught Radika and others in her village how to grow vegetables throughout the winter. HPG gave advice on farming without expensive chemicals and provided training in composting, building simple greenhouses and in other techniques.
Radika and her family now have healthy organic fruit and vegetables to eat and sell. She has also become a member of a women’s group that helps others to benefit from similar training.
