Zimbabwe Update

As Zimbabwe faces ongoing political tension and a worsening humanitarian situation, MRDF is appealing for funds to enable provision of food and HIV/AIDS care.

In light of the recent announcement from Zimbabwe barring aid agencies from operating in the country, MRDF's partner has temporarily suspended its field operations until after the run-off election on 27th June, for the safety of their staff. They will continue to do office-based work until that time and prepare to give humanitarian assistance as soon as it is possible.

Agricultural production in Zimbabwe has been brought to its knees and the economy devastated in recent years by controversial land reform, ongoing drought and high numbers of people affected by HIV/AIDS. Current estimates suggest that as few as 1 in 5 people have a job and inflation is the highest in the world. The UN is describing the situation as a 'triple threat' to food security.

Basic foodstuffs and fuel are in chronically short supply and unaffordable for many. Aid workers in the country report people scavenging wild fruits and berries or devising ways to prepare and eat plants previously considered poisonous.

MRDF is appealing for funds for Zimbabwe, which will be channelled through ACT (Action by Churches Together). ACT partners on the ground will respond with HIV/AIDS care, immediate food aid to vulnerable households and help to enable communities to revive crop production. Food provision strategies include training and equipment to set up and maintain 'nutrition gardens' and the distribution of small livestock.

With 45% of the population malnourished, the need for urgent aid to this country cannot be underestimated.

Taxpayers are encouraged to gift aid their donations where possible, adding 28p to every pound they give, at no extra personal cost.

Thank you.
